Homesteading: A Way of Life
We are a husband and wife team that both grew up in the suburbs far from the mountains. We met in a city and after we got married moved out to the country and have been trying to figure out this homesteading life a little more each year.
We have kept a garden since moving out of apartments over 10 years ago. We have been making jam and salsa that entire time. As the years progressed, our interests increased. We started growing more, preserving more, and buying local meat and honey. We then raised guinea hens for tick control. A few years later, we added chickens and then rabbits. And this spring, we are adding ducks!
We grow several vegetables for ourselves and our animals. We try to grow several variates of greens for the rabbits and pumpkins and squash to feed the chickens over winter. We grow our own herbs to use for our culinary uses and products we make on the homestead.
We eat as much fresh from our garden and locally as often as possible. We grow extra to preserve to last us through our 6 months of winter each year. Each year we are trying new ways to preserve what we grow and enjoy it late into the winter months.
We bake sourdough bread and then put sourdough in everything we can think of. We make sandwich bread at least once a week, sourdough loaf a few times a month, and then bake something with the kids a few times a week.
